Buyers name a play as if you could see it from the farm gate. These layers are the same class of public outlines landmen work from: EIA tight-oil and shale-gas plays, sedimentary basins, crude and gas transmission lines, and BOEM federal OCS wells. Land identifiers are public grids, not your title. Townships, ranges, sections, and lots come from BLM PLSS (New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Colorado, and other public-land states). Most of Texas uses surveys, abstracts, and blocks instead. Wells are Texas RRC, New Mexico OCD, and Ohio DNR.
How to use it with a letter
- Find the play or basin the letter names. If the outline is hundreds of miles from the county on the envelope, the story is marketing.
- Match the legal: section-township-range on PLSS land, or survey / abstract / block in Texas. Click a polygon for the call.
- Pipelines nearby do not mean your tract is in a unit. They mean midstream exists in the region.
- OCS wells are federal offshore only. Onshore pads and laterals need a county zoom in Texas, New Mexico, or Ohio, then the instrument.
