What Waha is

Waha is a West Texas natural gas hub in the Permian Basin — a pricing and trading point, not a posted cash offer on your tract. When a headline says gas “at Waha,” it is talking about the market where a lot of associated gas from Permian oil wells is valued after processing. There is a Waha community in Pecos County; the name people repeat in takeaway stories is the hub.

Pipes, plants, and headers around that hub move residue gas toward other Texas markets and beyond. A line that “starts at Waha” is midstream geography. It is not a legal description on a mineral deed, and it is not a reason to skip a second number.

A Waha print is a gas-market number. Your royalty decimal sits on a county record. Copies of any letter plus the county are enough to start. We do not promise to beat every letter.

Why Waha prices go ugly

Permian wells often make a lot of gas along with oil. When takeaway is tight, that gas piles up at the hub. Waha can print very low — sometimes below zero — because producers pay to get molecules out of the way so they can keep making oil. Operators then talk about completions, flaring, and “waiting on pipe.”

When a new header starts to flow, the same operators talk about remaining laterals again. Buyers translating that into a Friday deadline on an inherited tract are doing sales, not pipeline engineering.
